naked windows

Who knew naked windows were such a flex?  As the Atlantic states in a recent article entitled “Why Rich People Don’t Cover Their Windows”, nearly 20% of Americans earning over $150,000 a year are saying no thanks to window treatments. As someone who LOVES natural light and can’t get enough of it, you’d think I would 100% support this trend.  Well, yes and no.

Take my home, for example.  Our family likes to lounge around the house in our pj’s most weekends, typically playing games or watching TV.  While a straight view into our living room isn’t easily accomplished from street level, it feels cozier and more comfortable for us when we keep the shades drawn.  We did, however, choose to keep our back wall of windows and French doors sans treatment. Since we mostly use that sunroom as a drop zone from the outside, having an ever-bright, sunny space isn’t a concern.  It’s also a great place to watch the changing colors of the morning sky without any hint of shade or window treatment blocking the view.

  • Privacy – What parts of your home will be exposed to neighbors or passersby during the day or when your lights are on at night? Are you ok with that? Also consider what you do or don’t want to see when you glance out your window.
  • Do you ever find yourself closing the curtains to keep the sun out of your eyes?  No one wants to wear sunglasses inside. If your windows are south-facing, you might be getting too much of a good thing which can be a problem depending on what the room is used for during peak sun hours.
  • Energy efficiency – Window treatments are great for keeping the outside temperatures at bay and potentially reducing energy costs.
  • Does the trend suit your style? This is arguably the most important question. Trends are everywhere and new ones pop up as reliably as the morning sun.  Leaving your windows unadorned can be a great design aesthetic – particularly if you have beautiful molding or millwork to show off.  Or if you lean towards minimalism and simple, clean lines. But maybe you love mixing textures and the vibe of dark and snuggly. You do you, no matter what the headline.
