What Does an Interior Designer (Actually) Do?

“So….you just tell people what to buy…and you get PAID for it?!”

This was the comment from a last-mile delivery company I was considering using for full-service design projects. And I have to say, it made me laugh. Sure, helping people decide what to buy is part of what I do as an Interior Designer but there is a lot more to it than that.

Design

Let’s begin with the basics – Interior designers are responsible for designing spaces. This involves creating a visual plan for the client’s area, keeping the final outcome in mind.

  • Understand the client’s needs, preferences, goals, likes, dislikes, budget, and timeframe
  • Assess the current state of the space and determine what can, or cannot, be changed within the given budget & timeframe
  • Create visual documents such as floor plan drawings, mood boards, presentations, and 3-D renderings to illustrate the envisioned results

Sourcing & Procurement

After finalizing the design and receiving approval from the client, the Interior Designer proceeds to source all necessary elements. While you might be tempted to purchase items independently, doing so diminishes the advantages of working with a designer. Allowing your designer to oversee procurement provides access to a wider array of options, ensuring a distinctive and tailored home setting. Also, full-service interior design includes sourcing and procurement, which is quite time-intensive. Undertaking this task independently is unnecessary and encroaches on your valuable leisure time.

Project Management

During the procurement and installation phase, Interior Designers act as project managers, coordinating with various sources such as tradespeople, furniture suppliers, contractors, and installers. Having established a professional rapport with the trades improves confidence that the project will meet your expectations. Designers also handle any challenges that may arise during procurement, such as damages or delays.

Communication

Throughout the entire process, exceptional designers communicate early and often. Understanding your needs is essential, and active listening is key. What challenges are we addressing? What ambiance do you aim to create?

To ensure a seamless project installation, it is important to anticipate and mitigate common issues such as logistical challenges or delays. Tight communication with tradespeople and vendors allows designers to set clear expectations and then strive to surpass them. Attentive listening ensures a superior experience is delivered.

My Approach

The unwavering philosophy at Adorne is that clients deserve the best service, care, communication, and design. Many people come to us with a sense of what they want their home to look like, but lack the time and energy to make it happen. Its my job to gain a thorough understanding of your goals, rhythms of life, personal style and aesthetic preferences, channeling that information into a unified design strategy.

I present proactive ideas and solutions grounded in design best practices without forcing my style into the equation. This is your home; my primary function is to elevate and enhance your vision.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, Interior Designers help you create and execute a vision for your home that you most desire.  Designing is half of the job; execution and communication ensures that vision becomes your reality.
